Rebuidlng Europe’s Largest Egg Far, Chornobaivske, on Hold amid Constant Shelling of Kherson City
Due to the criminal actions of the occupiers, the largest factory farm in Europe, which was a key production facility for the Kherson region, was looted and destroyed. Ukrlandfarming Group, Avangard’s parent, said it had already prepared all the necessary technical documentation to resume production. However, it is impossible to start work as long as the Russian occupiers continue to shell the area.
In early March 2022, due to the occupation of part of Ukraine by Russian invaders, Europe's largest egg farm, Chornobaivske, a major employer and producer in the Kherson region, was left without electricity, without the ability to feed the poultry, transport workers to their workplaces and export finished products. About 4.5 million chickens died of thirst and starvation. The occupiers stole expensive modern equipment, and destroyed what they could not take away. Due to the death of 4.5 million birds, the situation in the region is classified by law enforcement agencies as an ecocide committed by the occupiers. This issue has become so critical that it was discussed specifically at a meeting of the UN General Assembly.
The total financial losses of the group as a result of Russian aggression are currently estimated at around USD 1 billion. In particular, losses at the Chornobaivske poultry complex are estimated at USD 300 million. Thus, losses from poultry deaths amount to about UAH 0.7 billion, or USD 20 million.
